Vravrona is famous for its stunning Temple of Artemis, a highlight sightseeing stop for any visitor of Attica Riviera. Apart from the archeological value, the area east of Athens International Airport includes a variety of habitats with tremendous ecological value. Widely known at Vravrona estuary, Eridanos stream comes from Markopoulo fields and forms a unique mixture of wetland, and agricultural area, all ending at a minor river mouth, which is home of a great number of birds and other wildlife.
During winter time, Kingfishers, Egrets, and Herons visit the area, along with dozens of gulls, terns, and several species or raptors. During a spring bird-watching visit, a birder could enjoy hundreds of swallows. martins and swifts chasing small insects while listening to warblers, chats, and nightingales. Apart from common European birds, Vravrona and Spata fields host some special species that are usually lifers or target species for many birders all around the world. These include the Great Spotted Cuckoo, Penduline Tit, Black-headed Bunting, Scops Owl, Eastern-Black-eared Wheatear, Long-legged Buzzard and much more.
The area is fairly easy to access and walk around. There is usually wildlife action in the river mouth, around the Temple of Artemis (where you might see a pair of Little Owl roosting on the ruins!), but even deeper inland towards Vravrona Tower. Spring is the best time to see and photograph orchids in eastern Attica and Vravrona is one of the best places. Reptile fauna is also very rich, with Marginated Tortoises and Greek Marsh Frogs probably being the most abundant species.
Vravrona is overall a great place for bird and wildlife watching. Being just a 10-minute drive from Athens International Airport makes it an exceptional location for visitors who wish to experience a small taste of Mediterranean wildlife especially if you are staying close to the area or having a layover.
During a birding tour at Vravrona Estuary and Spata fields, we can observe 30-60 species of birds (depending on season), and a variety of wildlife. So, take advantage of your Athens layover and get the chance to experience a sample of Mediterranean wildlife!
