Overview

Enjoy a Fig Orchard tour while learning about fig production and harvest. Along with grapes, figs were well-known for their medicinal and nutritional qualities since antiquity. Ancient Greeks believed they symbolized prosperity and peace therefore their exportation outside of Greece was illegal. The Royal Markopoulo Figs are known as one of Greece’s finest figs. They are particularly tasty, their outer skin is green with stripes, while the inside is brilliant red. During this experience, we will visit a well-known fig orchard in Porto Rafti just about 40 km from Athens. Porto Rafti is one of the best-known resorts of East Attica and offers visitors generous doses of natural beauty, history, and gastronomic delights. The orchard overlooks the crystal-clear waters of Porto Rafti while one can also feel the mountain breeze of Kouvaras forest that rises behind.

The experience at a glance

  • Our journey kicks off early in the morning so that we can enjoy the morning freshness the orchard offers . Our first stop is a well-known family-run dairy shop where we will enjoy a fresh rice pudding , a crispy piece of cheese pie and  learn all about the dairy products of the area.
  • Our next stop is a family-owned fig orchard in Porto Rafti that overlooks the sea. We will have the chance to meet the producers  ans stroll around the orchard and the single vinyard that lays in  the same site. With the help of our hosts,  you  have the opportunity to learn about the role of the fig tree in Greek heritage and culture and what are the different fig varieties of the region. Finaly you will also learn how the fig harvest is done  and  what equipment is used.
  • Your tour will come to an end with a unique pic nic style tasting of Fig confit and marmelades paired with cheese and other local products. Serve your self a glass of wine and pic a spot under the old fig trees before returning to Athens full of beautiful memories and culinary delights!
